Weighted Average Grade Calculator

It’s become stressful to keep your grades on top. Things get harder when different assignments carry different weights. A simple average fails you when a Final Exam is worth 40% and Homework is worth only 5%.
Our Weighted Grade Calculator removes the guesswork from your GPA. It runs the math and tells you exactly where you stand right now. You can also use the built-in Final Exam Planner. It shows you the exact score you need to secure that A.

How Weighted Grades Work?

Some assignments affect your final grade more than others in a Weighted Grading system. Your teacher gives each category a weight or percentage.

The Formula:

Weighted Grade=Σ(Score×Weight)/ΣWeights

Example:

Imagine you have two grades:

  • Homework: 100% (Worth 10% of class)
  • Midterm: 70% (Worth 90% of class)

Simple Average: (100+70)/2 = 85% (Looks like a B)
Weighted Average: (100 x 0.10) + (70 x 0.90) = 10 +63 = 73% (Actually a C)

The weighted average gives a more accurate result. It gives more value to the Midterm because the Midterm carries more weight.

How to Use This Calculator

Calculate Your Current Class Grade

  • Add Assignments: Enter the assignment name if you want. Then enter your grade (%) and the weight (%).
  • Ignore the total for now: Your weights do not need to equal 100% yet. If you complete only 30% of the coursework, the calculator finds the average for that 30%.
  • Result: The “Current Average” shows your current class grade based on your completed work.

The Final Exam Planner

After you check your current average, move to the Final Exam Planner section.

  • Current Grade: The calculator fills this section automatically.
  • Target Grade: Enter the final grade you want, such as 90 for an A.
  • Final Exam Weight: Enter the final exam weight, such as 20% or 30%.
  • Calculate: The tool shows the minimum score you need to reach your target grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my weights don’t add up to 100%?

That is normal. Your semester may still be in progress and completed work may only cover 60% or 70% so far. The calculator adjusts the average based on your finished work. It treats your completed work as the full progress right now.

What if I need more than 100% on the Final?

If the calculator shows 105%, you cannot reach your target grade with the final exam alone. You would need extra credit for that result. You can also set a lower target grade. For example, you may choose a B+ instead of an A.

Can I use points instead of percentages?

Yes, you can use points in the calculator. You only need to stay consistent with your entries. For example, you may earn 45 points out of 50. That score equals 90%. You can also use the percentages from your teacher.

What is the difference between Average and Weighted Average?

A Simple Average gives every assignment equal value. A Weighted Average gives more value to some assignments. Exams often count more than homework. Most schools use weighted averages for final grades.
