When working with Excel datasets, it is often necessary to move a group of cells to reorganize data, adjust layouts, or enhance the overall structure of the worksheet. Knowing how to move a group of cells in Excel ensures the dataset remains well-structured, easy to interpret, and ready for further analysis.
In addition to improving organization, this skill also helps users minimize mistakes and create more dynamic and professional-looking worksheets, especially useful for tasks like data reporting, dashboard creation, and performance tracking. By using Excel’s built-in tools and features, we can easily perform this operation.
Follow the steps below to move a group of cells in your Excel dataset.
➤ In your dataset, select the group of cells you want to move and press Ctrl + X .
➤ Next, highlight the destination cell or range where you want to place the data and press Ctrl + V to move the cells into their new location

In this article, we will learn how to move a group of cells in Excel using five effective methods.
Move a Group of Cells Using the Cut and Paste Shortcut
In the sample dataset, we have a worksheet called Project Tasks containing information about Task name, who the task is Assigned to, Status and Due Date. By using Excel’s Cut and Paste feature, we will now move the contents of column D into a new destination, column E. The updated dataset will be stored in a separate Cut & Paste worksheet.

Cut and Paste is one of the most frequently used features in Excel that allows users to relocate data from one part of a worksheet to another without duplicating it. By using this feature, we can efficiently move a group of cells within the same sheet or across different sheets.
Steps:
➤ Open the Cut & Paste worksheet, select the range D1 to D13 and press Ctrl + X to cut the selected cells.

Note:
Instead of using keyboard shortcuts, you can also right-click the selected cells, open the Context menu, and choose Cut to move the data manually.
➤ Next, select cell E1 and press Ctrl + V to complete the operation.

➤ All data from column D should now be successfully moved to column E.

Insert a New Column to Move a Group of Cells
The Insert feature, located in the Home tab, is a useful Excel tool that allows users to add new cells, rows, columns, or even entire worksheets to a workbook, helping to organize and expand datasets without overwriting existing data.
Working with the same dataset, we will use the Insert feature to move a group of cells from column D to column E of the dataset. We will display the updated dataset in a separate “Insert Feature” worksheet.
Steps:
➤ Head to the Insert Feature worksheet and select cells D1 to D13.
➤ Then, from the main menu, head to Home >> Insert >> Insert Sheet Columns.

Note:
To remove any empty cells created after inserting a new column, select those cells, right-click to open the context menu, and choose Delete >> Shift Cells Up.
➤ All cells from column D are now moved to column E.

Select and Drag to Move a Group of Cells Instantly
Select and Drag is another built-in Excel feature that allows users to quickly move cells, ranges, or entire rows and columns by dragging them to a new location.
Working with the same dataset again, we will now move all cells from column D to column E using the Select and Drag feature. The modified dataset will be stored in a separate worksheet called “Select & Drag”.
Steps:
➤ Head to the Insert Feature worksheet, select cells D1 to D13 and move your cursor to the edge of the selection until it changes into a four-headed directional arrow.

➤ Next, click and hold the arrow, then drag the selection to column E to move the data.

➤ Group of cells from column D is now moved to column E.

Use Shift with Left Click to Swap Entire Columns
Using the same dataset, we will now move a group of cells by swapping the Due Date column with the Status column, relocating it from column D to column C. The modified dataset will be displayed in a separate “Shift With Left Click” worksheet.
Steps:
➤ Go to the Shift With Left Click worksheet, select the range D1:D13 and keep moving the cursor to the edge of the selected cells until it turns into a directional arrow.

➤ Next, hold the Shift key and drag the selection toward Column C. When the Insert Indicator line appears, release the mouse button to move the cells into the new position.

➤ The Due Date and Status columns are now successfully swapped.

Reposition Grouped Rows Within the Worksheet
In the updated dataset, we have the same column headers and data, but rows 3 to 5 are now grouped together. By using Excel’s built-in tools and features, we will move rows 3,4 and 5 to rows 11,12 and 13 and display the updated dataset in a separate worksheet called “Grouped Cells”.

Steps:
➤ Head to the Grouped Cells worksheet, select the range A3 to D5 and keep moving the cursor to the edge of the selected cells until the directional arrow appears.

➤ Now, click and hold the mouse button and drag the selection down to the range A14:D16.

➤ Then, highlight range A3:D5 again and right-click to open the Context menu.

➤ From the Context menu, navigate to Delete >> Entire row, then press OK to confirm.

➤ Next, select cells A11 to D13 and from the main menu, head to Data >> Group >> Rows, then click OK to confirm the selection.

➤ All grouped cells from rows 3,4, and 5 are now successfully moved to rows 11,12 and 13.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Happens to Formulas When Moving a Group of Cells?
When you move a group of cells in Excel, any formulas referencing those cells automatically update their references to reflect the new location. However, if the formulas use absolute references, those references stay fixed and do not change even after moving the cells.
How do I Move a Group of Non Adjacent Cells in Excel?
Excel doesn’t allow moving multiple non-adjacent cell ranges simultaneously. To move them, you’ll need to cut and paste each range one at a time or run a VBA script to automate the process.
